Vikingarännet 2014 cancelled

After a cold period at the end of January, resulting in very good ice on lake Mälaren, mild weather has now arrived. The organizers, Friluftsfrämjandet and Swedish skating association, have therefore decided to cancel Vikingarännet 2014.

All forecasts now predicts mild and cloudy weather with temperatures above zero.

This means that solid ice along the track will thin out and the surface will soften. This could result in conditions that put the skaters at risk, in falls and injuries. In addition, the snow ploughs cannot move freely on the ice.

For Vikingarännet – the largest skating race in the world – it is paramount to put safety and quality first. The organizers, Friluftsfrämjandet and Swedish skating association, have therefore decided to cancel Vikingarännet 2014.

All participants that have registered and paid their fees will be contacted shortly with an offer for Vikingarännet 2015.
