Castle and garden

A visit to a castle is always an enjoyable experience – and Wenngarn’s Castle is no exception to the rule. The castle is today, just like 400 years ago, the heart of the society that is Wenngarn.

Here we have a café, event spaces, conference rooms, a library, a chapel and attractions to experience and enjoy. At Wenngarn you will find opportunities to get to know the people and events that have shaped  Sweden, all surrounded by a beautiful baroque garden. The closeness to Stockholm, Uppsala and Arlanda makes the castle easily accessible and we provide a wide range of seasonal activities.

Wenngarn Castle

Wenngarn Castle is first mentioned in historical documents in the early Middle Ages. What we see today is primarily the result of Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie’s extensive restoration during the 1660’s. The most pristine part of the castle from that time is the stunning chapel that is held to be the most finely preserved baroque chapel in northern Europe. The castle has seen its fair share of owners, all from royal families, knights, German counts and other people of high ranks. It has been the scene of many grand feasts and political intrigues. From this tumultuous history there are traces of medieval times as well as modern-day to be found at the castle that, combined, forms one of Sweden’s most fascinating castle settings.

The Castle Gardens of Wenngarn

After a lengthy time of decay and overgrowth we have now awakened the garden out of its dormant state. The goal is now to create a living park that both manifests its historical use as well as functioning as a place for exciting modern-day activities. The garden is free of admittance for visitors.

The garden was first created when Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie’s reshaping of the castle in the 1660’s. It was created as a hybrid park where decorative plants mixed together with utility plants forming a practical and beautiful fusion. In the castle gardens, fruits and vegetables are grown once again to supply the restaurant with fresh produce. We also have volunteers working here from the organization WWOOF – World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms wwoof.net

Conference

Hotel Anstalten forms part of a unique thousand-year-old environment, just minutes from Sigtuna and Stockholm Arlanda Airport. It is a small hotel with a wide range of possibilities and provides a homelike atmosphere.

The hotel and its newly renovated rooms have preserved details from the time when the imposing building served as an asylum for alcoholics. Here you can stay in first-class comfort and convenience as well as attend meetings and seminars in a stimulating setting and enjoy locally produced food served in the building’s original dining hall, which now functions as a restaurant.

The newly built conference building boasts all modern technology and conveniences. The nine conference buildings, together with additional buildings on the estate, accommodates groups – from 6 up to 300 people – and the close proximity to Arlanda, Stockholm and Uppsala makes it an ideal location for your conference or event.

In addition we offer a series of activities, including: activities in Kulturstallet (a former Stable building), historical hikes, wine tastings in the castle vaults or perhaps try out our top-modern gym?
