Summer is finally here and the castles in Sigtuna open up for the public. Skokloster Castle, Rosersbergs Castle and Skånelaholm Castle are beautiful excursions for the whole family. The stone barn Steninge Shops and Events is open all year round for shopping and restaurant visits.

Memorial exhibition at Rosersberg’s Palace

Among Sweden’s Royal Palaces, Rosersberg is the best kept secret. Here, time has stood still since the 18th century. This year, the castle is open during weekends in May and September, as a complement to June, July and August when the castle is open Tuesdays to Sundays. A memorial exhibition for Prince Bertil and Princess Lilian will be open for self-guided tours. Indulge the royal environment, history, and summer café on the castle terrace.

Skokloster Castle

Skokloster Castle is open on weekends in May and September, and daily from June to August. The remarkable baroque castle and its surroundings is a stunning sight for the whole family. Family sightseeing and children’s workshop is open from July 2 to August 18, Tuesday to Sunday. In May, pony rides will be available for children. Other animals will be visiting the castle as well, to greet the children.

In this summer’s major exhibition, Min skattkammare (My treasure), famous Swedish people with different backgrounds and different interests, have chosen their favourite artifact in the castle. Lasse Åberg, Lars Wallin, Knut Knutsson, and Doreen Månsson are some who have sought through Skokloster Castle’s furniture, art, tools and weapons from different centuries to find their own, personal treasure. Exhibition is open from June 1 to September 30.

Skånelaholm Castle

Skånelaholm Castle has a beautiful setting by Lake Fysingen. The castle dates back to the 17th century, when the former Swedish King Magnus Ladulås was the owner. Here you will find a collection of old Swedish antiquities and a unique botanic collection which was assembled by the famous Swedish botanist Carl von Linné’s pupil Magnus Bromelius. Skånelaholm Castle is open all weekends during the period of May 11 to September 15. Free admission.

Steninge Castle

Steninge Shops and events is beautifully situated by Steninge castle and next to lake Mälaren. The palace is closed to visitors, but visitors are welcome to walk around in the park. The stone barn has several shops and a restaurant, and is open all year round. A summer exhibition of Yrjö Edelmann will be shown from June 1. A theatre for children is ongoing from Midsummer Day.

Yes it is true! The Hultsfred Festival 2013 moves to Stoxa in Sigtuna. The festival will be held on the 13th-15th of June at Skepptuna Golf Course. The area is also used for the annual MaskinExpo, Scandinavia’s largest exhibition for building and construction. Skepptuna Golf Course is surrounded by a beautiful and green nature, next to a camp site with a large capacity. Stoxa is easily accessed through Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Märsta and close to hotels in Sigtuna.

- It is a unique area that enables us to keep the feeling of a classic camping festival in the middle of the nature. However, the major difference is that the centre of Stockholm is just a public transport ride away, says organizer FKP Scorpio Hultsfred in a statement.

At Sigtuna’s own airport, and Sweden’s largest international airport – Stockholm Arlanda, time just flies. If you look, you’ll discover many unusual and exciting areas. Anni, our airport expert at Arlanda Visitors Center has a bundle of tips: At Terminal 5, the kid’s Vasa Ship attracts young passengers to sail away. Outside the same Terminal, a flower-filled arbour invites stressed travellers to a peaceful escape before the journey starts. If you would prefer spoiling yourself among international artists and politicians, Arlanda VIP service prepares special arrival and departure arrangements as well as weddings.

On the 1st of June, the new exhibition “From Ingegerd to Estelle – an exhibition about the Swedish princesses” opens up at Sigtuna museum. The exhibition is a journey from the past to the present starting from Princess Ingegerd from Sigtuna.

Princess Ingegerd of Sigtuna became the Grand Duchess of Kiev in the early 1000′s. She gave birth to 10 children, became a key person in the Christianization and a spokesman for peace. Later on, she was declared Saint, by the name of St. Anna.

The exhibition also involves a variety of people, from artists to historians.

- We believe that together these two princesses reveal an interesting picture about their own lives as well as other princesses. Their fates reflect the role that some women had in these times; what it meant to be married, to become a princess and how the gender roles looked like, says Ted Hesselbom, Director of Sigtuna museum.

Saturday the 1st of June is the day of the Princess Exhibition inauguration. On the same day, the Sigtuna Ingegerd Festival will take place – a full day dedicated to Ingegerd with exciting seminars, music and thrilling activities.

In the publication “Ingegerd Olof Skötkonungs Daughter”, written by Rune Edberg, you can read more. It can be purchased at Sigtuna museum.
